One of the biggest names in graphics cards, NVIDIA, is still having a big problem with its RTX 4090 GPUs. Even though the company is trying to fix the issue, nearly 200 cases of GPUs melting are still being reported every month.
The Crisis of Melting
Since it came out in October 2022, NVIDIA’s top-of-the-line GPU, the RTX 4090, has had a serious problem that makes power cables melt. People have put pictures online that show the cable that powers the GPU³ is broken. NorthridgeFix, a company that fixes GPUs, said that it still gets burned RTX 4090s from customers all over the world and fixes them “every single day”³.
The Cause
A type of power adapter that comes with the RTX 4090² is to blame for the overheating problem. The 16-pin connector is called the “12VHPWR” adapter, and it lets standard PCIe cables² connect ATX 2.0 power supplies to the GPU. NVIDIA has found that melting and overheating can happen if the connector on the adapter is not firmly plugged into its socket.
NVIDIA’s Answer
Because of the problem, NVIDIA has said that it will honor any warranties and RMA any cards that were damaged because of the overheating power connector. GeForce RTX 4090 owners are told by the company to make sure the adapter is securely connected before putting the board in its PCIe slot. This doesn’t change the fact that there are still a lot of RTX 4090s out there with the original 12VHPWR power connector.
Bottom Line
The GPU melting crisis is still a big problem for NVIDIA and its customers, even though the company is working to fix it. It’s clear that the problem is still not fixed since almost 200 cases are reported every month. Users should make sure their power cables are securely connected and closely watch their GPUs for any signs of overheating until a complete solution is found.
