Nintendo has sent a DMCA takedown warning to 8,535 GitHub folders that have code from the Yuzu emulator for Switch²² (May 5, 2024).

The Notice to Take Down

Nintendo said that GitHub servers “offer and provide access to the Yuzu emulator or code based on [it]” and that’s where the warning was posted.². This comes after Nintendo and Yuzu creator Tropic Haze² came to an agreement in March.

What the Takedown Meant

There were a lot of Yuzu sources that were taken down after the shutdown notice. GitHub has reached out to all the owners of the affected repositories and told them how to send a DMCA counter notice.

The Reason for the Attack

This is what Nintendo did because they say the Yuzu emulator “illegally gets around Nintendo’s technological protection measures and runs illegal copies of Switch games”². This is another step Nintendo is taking to protect its intellectual property.¹².

1: What Happened After the Takedown?

The warning to take down the page has had a big effect on the Yuzu community². Users of the Switch liked the emulator, but it has now been officially shut down. This has made a lot of people look for other options².

 Bottom Line

Nintendo’s tough stand against copies like Yuzu shows how much the company cares about protecting its own ideas. But it also makes me wonder about the future of emulation and users’ rights to change and tailor their own hardware².
