Microsoft has released the test version of DirectSR, a new API that will make sure all Direct3D 12 games support super resolution (SR). This is a big step forward. Adding Intel’s, AMD’s, and Nvidia’s upscaling methods to video games will take a lot less time now thanks to this development.
The World of High-Resolution Technologies
Three GPU hardware makers have each released their own SR technologies: AMD FidelityFXTM Super Resolution, Intel XeSS, and Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution. These cutting-edge methods improve games by increasing frame rates while keeping the quality of the graphics at a high level. But because there are so many different kinds of SR, coders are looking for a single API that works with all of the different hardware.
Press Enter
Getting AMD, Intel, and Nvidia to work together is what DirectSR is all about. They worked together to create an API that makes the most of their in-market upscaling technologies. DirectSR changes the game in these ways:
- Multi-Vendor Support: DirectSR supports SR from more than one vendor by using a single set of inputs and outputs. DLSS Super Resolution, FidelityFX Super Resolution, and XeSS can now all be used by developers through a single code path.
“Flexible Hardware Support” means that GPU drivers already support DirectSR. Intel XeSS and Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution can be used with this card, and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.2 can be used right out of the box. In real time, users can choose the upscaler that works best with their gear.
- Standalone Solution: DirectSR gets rid of the need to include vendor-specific SDKs or bundle tools from different vendors with games. It has never been easier to combine SR from different vendors.
Impact on Industry
The race to be the best in the AI market goes on, and DirectSR adds a new layer to it. By combining SR technologies, Microsoft hopes to level the playing field and give creators the tools they need to make games that look great on a wide range of Windows devices.
Keep an eye on DirectSR as it changes and more coders adopt this uniform way of doing super resolution. The game world can’t wait to see what happens!
