With Microsoft Edge, you will soon be able to control how much RAM your browser uses, which gives users more power. This change is great for people who want to fine-tune their viewing experience and get the most out of their computer’s resources.
The feature that lets you change RAM
With Microsoft Edge, you can now control how much RAM the browser can use by hand. How it works:
Resource Controls Slider: There is a “resource controls” slider in the trial builds of Edge. You can set the highest amount of RAM Edge should use by moving this button. The smallest amount that you can send is 1GB, and the maximum is as much memory as your PC has.
Change the game mode: There’s also a switch that lets you choose when these RAM limits apply. You have two choices:
As You Play: If you like to play PC games, you might want to give your game more memory than your browser.
All the time: You can also make sure that the RAM limits are always followed, no matter what you’re doing.
Act of Balancing
This tool gives you options, but it’s important to find the right mix. If you set the cap too low, it might slow down the system and force it to use hard storage more. There is no way that SSDs can match the speed of DDR4 or DDR5 memory when it comes to disk access. If you use your SSD too much, it might break down faster over time.
Useful Applications
The ability to change RAM works in a number of situations, including:
Background Browsing: Keep a large browser window open while you play games or do other things.
Resource Management: Make sure that tabs that won’t behave don’t suddenly use up all of your RAM.
Being Available
This feature is currently available in Edge’s Canary channel, which is a safe version that is updated every day with new testing features. Even though it’s fun, be careful when you change RAM limits. If it ever makes it to the stable builds, be careful how you use it.
Keep an eye out for more changes as Microsoft Edge keeps getting better!
