It came as a surprise, but Intel has decided to stop selling the boxed versions of its enthusiast-class 13th Generation Core “Raptor Lake” CPUs.

The Break Through

The company said in a product change notice (PCN) released last month that they will stop sending these desktop CPUs in late June. The Core i5-13600K, 13600KF, Core i7-13700, 13700KF, and Core i9-13900K/13900KF are the most famous Raptor Lake desktops that come in a box.

What It Does

On May 24, 2024³, the 13th Gen Core i5-13600K/KF, Core i7-13700K/KF, and Core i9-13900K/KF/KS “Raptor Lake” processors that come in boxes and have the multiplier open will no longer be made. These units will be sent out by June 28, 2024².

The End Results

While we don’t think the 13th Gen K-series CPU supply will go away all at once, we do think that prices will go up as sellers try to get rid of all of their overclockable Raptor Lake CPU stock². On the other hand, most 12th-Gen Alder Lake CPUs are still very cheap, so it’s possible that these retired Raptor Lake CPUs will act the same way (until stock runs out, of course)².

The Next Steps

It’s interesting that Intel is getting rid of their even older 12th Generation Core “Alder Lake” processors² before they get rid of their enthusiast-class 13th Generation Core chips. You can still buy 12th Gen chips today, both in boxes and on trays, and the Alder Lake silicon is still widely used in many product families².

Bottom Line

Intel’s 13th Gen boxed series chips are no longer being made, which is a big change in the company’s product line. It’s still unclear how this choice will affect the CPU market, since Intel is always coming up with new ideas and changing to meet the needs of the market.
