May 11, 2024 – According to reports, work is already underway on DDR6, the next version of memory standards. It is supposed to be much better than DDR5−.
How DDR6 Came to Be
Samsung is one of the biggest memory module makers in the world, and a leak says that work on DDR6 has already begun². DDR6 development has been talked about by the company for a few years now, and it was made public during Samsung Tech Day 2022 as part of its memory development roadmap⁵.
The Performance That Was Expected
It is believed that DDR6 will let you send data at up to 12,800Mbps on JEDEC modules and up to 17,000Mbps on boosted modules⁴. This is four times faster than DDR4 and twice as fast as DDR5. It will also have four memory channels per module, while DDR5 modules only have two.
The Process of Making Things
Samsung has said that DDR6 will use MSAP, which stands for “Modified Semi Additive Process.” More of the copper plate where the circuit patterns are made is coated with this process. This makes it possible to make RAM units with more precise circuits that can handle more data at once⁴.
The Date It’s Likely To Come Out
DDR6 will start to be sold in stores in 2026⁵ if the current schedule is correct. That’s about how long it took for DDR4 and DDR5 memory to come out.
Bottom Line
The development of DDR6 is a big step forward for the tech business. It will be interesting to see how DDR6 changes the world of memory standards as the industry keeps coming up with new ideas.
