The United States is finally agreeing with the European Union on personal rights, which is a big change from the past.
The Changes to Your Right to Privacy
The US is still behind Europe when it comes to protecting customers’ data effectively, but state laws² have helped make progress. Now, US companies can show they care about EU data privacy rules by self-certifying that they follow the EU-US Data Privacy Framework².
The Privacy Framework between the EU and US
Within the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the European Commission worked together to make sure that companies on both sides of the Atlantic could follow EU data protection rules when sending personal data from the EU to the US. This was done to encourage trade between the two countries.
What It Means for US Businesses
Following rules like properly deleting data, keeping data shared with others safe, and following data minimization, purpose limitation, and fairness are some of the things that need to be done to do this. Europe is working hard to get more digital privacy rights, but the United States doesn’t seem to have any plans.
Where Privacy Rights Are Going
Europeans are still more likely to protect their privacy . Europe is home to 56% of all private searches on Startpage every day⁵. These users tend to be more privacy-conscious. The new EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (Framework) is being built. It will replace the EU-U.S. Privacy Shieldⁿ, which is no longer in effect.
Bottom Line
The change in how the US feels about privacy rights is a big change in the way people around the world talk about data protection. It will be interesting to see how this changes the tech industry and customer rights over the next few years as the US moves closer to matching the EU’s strict privacy rules.
